In 2023, I founded CELEBRATE Diabetes, inspired by a journey that deeply shaped me. My diagnosis with type II diabetes was a wake-up call—one that carried the weight of my own struggles and the heartbreaking legacy of my mother, Donetta.
My mom faced diabetes with determination, embracing the changes needed to care for her health. But after retiring, she wrestled with inactivity and a growing dependence on sweets. Watching her health decline was devastating, and in 2021, I lost her. That loss shook me to my core.
I had always been an active person—movement was a part of who I was. But grief has a way of quietly stealing parts of you without notice. In the months after losing my mom, I found myself withdrawing, becoming inactive and sedentary, almost without realizing it. The weight of sorrow made even simple tasks feel impossible, and before I knew it, I was following the same path she had. As I looked inward, I realized that if I didn’t change, I would lose myself, too.
When I was diagnosed, I had a choice: let diabetes take control or take control of my health. I chose the latter. Through hard, focused work, I transformed my habits, and in just 10 months, I brought my A1C down from 12 to 6.3—proof that change is possible with commitment, education, and support.
CELEBRATE Diabetes was born from this journey, driven by the belief that no one should face diabetes alone. More than an organization, this is a community—a space where people can find empowerment, resources, and the encouragement to reclaim their health and their happiness.
By sharing my story, I hope to show others that diabetes doesn’t have to define them—it’s possible to take control and truly celebrate life. This journey isn’t just mine—it’s ours.
Join me, and together, let’s build a future that’s healthier, stronger, and full of possibility. CELEBRATE Diabetes is here for you.
